What started as a simple Easter egg delivery has grown into something truly special for the children and families visiting Queen Alexandra Hospital’s Children’s Emergency Department.
Last spring, the President of Havant Rotary Club delivered Easter treats to the department and met Zoe Parton, one of our amazing Children’s Emergency Department Play Specialist. During their chat, Zoe explained how important it is for young patients to feel comfortable and at ease — and how bright, colourful surroundings can make a world of difference.
Unfortunately, wall art hadn’t been part of the original plans for the new department — but that quickly changed!
Inspired by Zoe’s passion, the Havant Rotary President set out to raise funds to transform the space, calling on support from other local Rotary Clubs across the hospital’s catchment area. Together, they raised an incredible £9,030.87 to make the dream a reality.
We’re so grateful to the following clubs for their fantastic fundraising efforts:
- Havant Rotary – £3,450 (raised through collections at Tesco and Waitrose)
- Fareham Rotary – £1,405 (from their brilliant “Call My Bluff” evening)
- Portsmouth & Southsea Rotary – £1,000
- Gosport Rotary – £500
- Portsmouth North Rotary – £1,000
- Southsea Castle Rotary – £500
- Whiteley Rotary – £500
- Fareham Meon Rotary – £1,000
Together, they’ve helped turn plain walls into a magical, child-friendly environment that brings smiles to children, parents, and staff alike.
A huge thank you also goes to local artist and founder of icanseethesea Ltd, Lizzie Cornelius, who generously donated a collection of her distinctive artwork. Lizzie’s vibrant designs celebrate Portsmouth and the sea, featuring underwater scenes, puffins, seagulls, octopuses, and iconic local landmarks like the Pier and the Spinnaker Tower.
Each piece begins as an original painting, then is beautifully adapted for large-scale vinyl prints to brighten the department’s walls. From her famous pink seagulls wearing sunglasses and flip-flops to the sweeping Portsmouth skyline, Lizzie’s art brings warmth, humour, and local pride to every corner of the space.
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the Rotary Clubs involved, Lizzie Cornelius, and every member of the public who donated and supported this project.
Thanks to your kindness and generosity, our Children’s Emergency Department is now a bright, welcoming place — one that helps children feel calm, cared for, and comforted when they need it most.
